Sam's Spectacular Selections

Sam (SW)

I sample the (very) occasional mystery, I dabble in horror, but who am I kidding? I'm a fantasy and science fiction gal at heart. Whether aliens or dragons, lasers or swords, if it has complex settings, political intrigue, epic battles and even a little romance, you can bet I've read it or it's on my list. Surprises, unexpected twists and concepts that challenge the mind are especially appreciated.

Sam is also the Young Adult Program Coordinator for Mysterious Galaxy.

A NPR “2009’s Best Young Adult Fiction” selection, this collection of two short stories and one novella is my new favorite read. Superbly written, each of the three stories explores fairy tales and mythology from different cultures in different eras around the world. In Goblin Fruit, Laini examines what it is to feel outcast through modern-day gypsies. Spicy Little Curses Such as These takes the reader to an India of the past with a new look at its pantheon. Changeling delves into the ancient beliefs of Persian Zoroasrianism in the current world. All three stories are introduced by a panel of exquisite illustrations by Jim di Bartolo and all three investigate what happens when lips touch three times: Something beautiful, something horrible and something magical. A gorgeous book on all levels, highly recommended for fans of Neil Gaiman and Charles de Lint!

Right now you should be cooing, "Ooo! Another one from Neil Gaiman!" (If you're not, check your temperature and see a doctor.) You may also be questioning, "I wonder if it'’s as good as his Newbery Award-winning The Graveyard Book?" or "Does this at all compare to the smash-hit Coraline?" You'll be happy to hear... er... read that your salivation is deserved and the answer to your questions is an emphatic "Yes!". Neil has crafted another delightful and peculiar fantasy that will not disappoint. Odd, an appropriate name for this strange protagonist, lives in the frozen north in a time of gods and monsters. A cripple living in a warrior-culture that doesn't look kindly on such things, Odd decides to set out on his own. It is then that he meets the mysterious fox, eagle and bear... and his adventure begins.

Viking mythology that's tweaked in a very Neil way, Odd and the Frost Giants is a must for any fan of Neil Gaiman, myths and legends, humor and adventure, or all of the above.
