Diane's Delights

A little something about Diane's (DB) reading habits ... in her own words. I started reading scary stories when I was three years old. Reading at three, you say!?! Well, sorta. I consider "Little Red Riding Hood" a scary story, don't you? That was one big bad nasty scary wolf, if you ask me. And I've been reading scary stories ever since. I love them ... really love them. Most people can tell when I'm reading a good one when they hear, "ohmigod!," while I'm reading or "oh no!" or the ever-popular "eeeuuuuuw." My husband has learned to ignore me when I have these reading outbursts. Let's just hope he doesn't interpret the real thing, a fire or an earthquake, for example, as crying wolf!
Go ahead, try to scare me

People are always asking Jim why he hasn’t written a book about animals (seein’ as how he used to be a veterinarian). Well, folks, here is the latest James Rollins book – a stand alone that will sweep you up and have you holding your breath. You want animals?? Well, here are animals you’d never want in your home or your backyard. Someone has been messin’ with genes and strange things are popping out all over. A fishing trawler shipwrecks off the swamp in Louisiana. Lorna Polk is a Louisiana state veterinarian and she is asked to take a look at what was found in that trawler. Some of the animals are captured and Lorna is checking them out. She finds that, not only are they not “built” the same as other animals, but also show a great deal more intelligence than she’s ever seen before. Almost human-like. Case in point, there are no animals like these – not on this world. Follow Lorna and a U.S. Border Patrol Agent as they ruffle feathers and shed some skin to find out what this is all about. Be prepared to run.

Published: Grand Central Publishing, 01/01/2010
Carrie Vaughn’s seventh installment of the Kitty Norville series is out and every bit as good as the last six! Kitty’s been invited to join TV’s first reality show – where everyone will be a supernatural. Well, Kitty has her doubts about that kind of thing – she can’t stand reality shows and sure as heck doesn’t think all “supernaturals” could even get along in a two week, closed in environment. She decides – what the hell – she’ll try anything once. As the two weeks start, within a couple of days things deteriorate as the violence begins. What’s happening? Before long, phones are cut, power is out and no place to go because they’re out in the middle of nowhere. Who’s killing the guests and how to stop it, puts everyone in a very bad mood. But they’d better work together on this or there’ll be no one left to tell the story. Great book with some interesting surprises. Pick it up – it’s another very good Kitty story!

I love vampires – always have - although these days I like werewolves or “were-whatever” almost as much. Anyway, back to vampires. It never ceases to amaze me how many different ways vampire books are written. You’d think after hundreds of years (or thousands, depending on the country) that a story line for another vampire book just doesn’t exist. Well, think again… You’ll love this one: A Boeing 777 lands at JFK and within seconds it shuts down, deader than a doornail (doornail?). No lights, no communication, no noise and all the windows are shuttered. And this all happened in seconds after the plane landed. OK – spooky, huh. That’s not the half of it. The CDC gets involved and finds that all is not as it should be – all the people inside are dead – of what, there’s no clue at first. Then there’s a Holocaust survivor in Spanish Harlem who seems to know more than the CDC. This book is the first in a trilogy and two of my favorite authors are quoted on the cover recommending it – James Rollins and Dan Simmons. How could you go wrong. It’s fast paced and lethal. I really liked it. The only bad thing is that I’ll have to wait for the second book to see what happens next! But it’s worth it!

Patient Zero: A Joe Ledger Novel (Paperback)

Yes, I love horror and I love paranormal romance. But, I’ve never liked “slice and dice” or “chop ‘em up, kill ‘em and “eat ‘em” (not necessarily in that order) novels. Until I read Jonathan Maberry’s Patient Zero.
So let’s talk about this big change in my life. I’m always telling the people I work with at Mysterious Galaxy Books, that I need to enlarge my reading scope. I mean, after all, I have the most interesting books in the universe all around me every time I go to work there. (Ahem…) Maybe it’s the fact that James Rollins: Sandstorm, Amazonia, The Last Oracle… (whom I adore) put his stamp of approval on Patient Zero. Maybe it was the slick description on the back that talked about detectives, counterterrorism taskforces and a group of terrorists trying to harm the good ole’ US of A. But it was the sentence about “…a dreadful bioweapon that can turn ordinary people into zombies…” that grabbed me at throat level. I said to myself – Ooooh-Kaaay, I can do this – let’s see where it leads.
Hot, fast-paced, violent, lethal, heart pounding terror, accurate tightly written credible storyline, characters that grip you and have you shouting “YES!” when they win and “Oh god no!” when they lose -- and did I say, violent, lethal and heart pounding? It takes a lot for a book to drag you into an “oh that can’t possibly ever happen” story and find yourself believing it the more you keep reading. A good story teller can do that and Jonathan Maberry does it with his latest book.
So okay – I didn’t enlarge my scope really wide, did I? or did I? The men and woman of the special group called Department of Military Science (DMS) put their minds and bodies toward fighting the deadliest group of terrorists ever formed. They didn’t believe it themselves until they saw the reality and knew without a shadow of a doubt that they needed to save the day – because if they didn’t – holy terror would ensue and no one human would be left alive to tell their children the chilling story… Oh and maybe it’s not just terror or silly things like real zombies, for heaven’s sake – maybe it’s really good horror – and I haven’t gone as astray as I’d thought. Heheheheh

This is Daniel Suarez’s first novel and what a first novel it is. Do you remember some of these famous movie computers - HAL 9000, Colossus, Proteus, WOPR, Skynet and others? Let me tell you that these computers and their programs have “nothing” on the computer program that runs throughout this book (Remember Joshua?). So disconnect from any other movie or book computer you’ve ever seen or read! And get ready for this fast moving, exciting, unparalleled novel of a computer program designed to bring about a new world order. Matthew A. Sobol PhD is dead of brain cancer. He made billions of dollars in the computer game industry. And now he’s gone. Or is he. Detective Sergeant Peter Sebeck is called out to a murder scene. Thus starts an investigation that will turn the world on its head. Fast as you can blink, the action starts. Bombs. Cars without drivers. Death traps. Communication from a mysterious computer game that seems to be in control – of what and how much, is the mystery. This story is plausible – and I don’t mean in the “science fiction realm” – I mean in this world today or not far away from today. Suarez uses all his resources gained from his work as a systems consultant to Fortune 1000 companies. This book will scare the hell out of you. You will be brought along a huge wave of deadly information that will keep you hooked from the moment it starts until when and if it ends. Don’t miss this one!
